Based on the original Sam Devlin Godzilla 25 design, this boat was custom built by Seattle boat builder Tom Larkin. Having built at least five previous boats, Larkin started the build in late 2006 and launched the boat in July of 2010.

The construction technique is the Devlin “Stitch and Glue” method. This method, developed and refined at Devlin Designing Boat Builders for almost 40 years and adopted by other segments of the wooden boat industry, results in a boat that is light, strong and much easier to maintain over the long term.

20-gallon polyethylene freshwater storage tank, with external above-deck fill port.
20-gallon polyethylene gray water holding tank, with external in-deck pump out.
10-gallon black water holding tank integral to head, with external in-deck pump out.

The pilothouse is entered from either side via a full length sliding door. Immediately inside the starboard entry is the helm station and helm seating. The helm seating consists of two fold-down captain's chairs on sliding mounts.

Behind the helm seating, on the far end of the starboard pilothouse bulkhead, is mounted a Dickinson Newport Propane Fireplace. The combustion process is completely isolated from the inside of the boat by the unique, direct vent design. The fireplace is supplied by a 5-gallon vertical steel OPD tank located in an open locker in the starboard stern. The fireplace has a built-in blower to provide good heat circulation and plenty of BTUs to keep this custom Godzilla 25 warm all winter.

On the port side of the helm station is a single step down forward into the foc'sle, where the head and additional storage is located. In the head is a SeaLand/Dometic gravity-flush toilet with an integrated 10 gallon holding tank. This holding tank is serviced via a deck mounted pump out.

Turning towards the stern is a short step down from the helm station into the aft cabin compartment. The cabin compartment contains a standard full-sized mattress with plenty of headroom. The cabin compartment is vented by two bronze port holes on each side and an additional safety/utility hatch is located in the rear bulkhead of the cabin. Many small storage compartments beneath and surrounding the mattress have been created to optimize usage of the available space. In the cabin compartment is mounted the ship's clock and a CO detection alarm.

The galley is located on the forward bulkhead of the aft cabin. In a novel use of space, the galley station is mounted underneath the helm seating. To access the galley the helm seating is folded down and lifted away from its normal position atop the galley station. The galley contains a single stainless-steel sink served with pressurized cold water from a 20-gallon tank. The sink drains into a 20-gallon graywater holding tank with a deck mounted pump out. Beside the sink is a single burner butane stove. A number of storage compartments have been built into the galley station and adjacent bulkhead to maximize use of the available space.

For exploring or rowing to shore when at anchor, this mini tug is accompanied by a 7-1/2 feet long dinghy. This custom-built wooden dinghy comes complete with wooden oars. The dinghy is launched and retrieved from the aft deck using an easy 3-part tackle system. Additionally, a boat ladder is provided for swimming and climbing back aboard afterwards.

Citing from Sam Devlin's original design notes, "I became inspired to build a bigger Godzilla-type tug, one that would have more interior room and that was large enough to allow cruising on the waters of Puget Sound or even potentially up to Southeast Alaska." This Sam Devlin design was custom built by Tom Larkin of Seattle and has proven itself worthy on at least one previous trip up the Inside Passage towards Southeast Alaska. As the Devlin Boat Company states, the Godzilla 25 is "a working boat that would happily carry you away to distant ports."

This custom Godzilla 25 design has spent many hours commuting to work with its original owner, and has spent many nights away on vacation, exploring the BC Inside Passage. In addition to the Inside Passage, this boat has ventured to a variety of Lower BC destinations and numerous ports within Puget Sound. This is not a "big boat", but a lot of thought and creative design has optimized the use of available space. This boat has proven its ability to travel and to provide safe and comfortable accommodations.

I have personally reviewed the extensive notes provided by the original builder of this boat. These notes begin during the pre-build phase, continue through the many stages of the build process, and then continue to document the launch, travels, and maintenance of this boat. I am impressed with the great level of research, thought, and creativity that has gone into this custom mini tug and cruiser. She was built to be very sturdy, safe, and easy to maintain. A great deal of attention was given to optimizing the use of space and providing practical conveniences. She is clearly the source of great pride and joy.

This mini tug cruiser now awaits a new owner and a new set of adventures. Where will your next adventure take you?
